The first half of this refurbishment was bringing the box gutters and parapets up to scratch so that the fit out and remaining works could be completed without water damage. With heavily rusted and failing gutters, parapets and downpipes, we supplied and installed 110m of box gutters and 200m of parapet flashings. Because we are championing training and improvement within out business, we did get a few leaks which were identified at testing and easily rectified.

Our apprentices learnt how to make stop ends, cut in sumps, droppers and overflows as well as install parapet flashings in situ to minimise the need for extra joints. We are very grateful to have worked with Venn Constructions on this job and for their understanding that apprentices have to learn as well. This was our first job with Venn’s and we continue to have a very close working relationship with this fantastic group of people! And yes, the boss was on this job, sweating it out in the middle of January 2018 with the guys! I’m very proud of the team.

The second part of this job was to install trade waste, rough in, drainage and fit off. The trade waste and part of the rough-in was done under the building which you can see in one of the photos was done in difficult conditions often times crawling or on hand and knees. The other part of the rough-in had to be chased into blockwork.

The ponding was causing the bitumen to fail frequently. The installation of heavy duty concrete pits and grates was selected as well as concrete pipes. Our biggest challenge was minimum falls as the roadway and adjacent spoon drain was very flat and was overcome by taking levels and laying pipework with a laser level.

The materials used was red line PE to suit existing and the jointing method was EF Poly Welding. Our biggest challenge here was time constraints and limited access. We got this job done with minimal notice to ensure major works were completed over the holidays as well as working in with other trade contractors and delivery drivers to ensure no hold of up works suffered and time blowouts occurred.

Our installation required approval and certification from QUU as well as AS3500 compliance. The water pipework fed a house as well as UQ’s cattle research facility via trickle feed system to the existing tanks. This job was completed around cattle management as well as co-ordination with truck drivers delivering fill from another job at UQ. Because of the low lying nature of the land, it was quite boggy and multiple vehicles and machines required recovery. This was a good job and we were lucky to have had good weather throughout the job which allowed the ground to dry out.
