AS/NZS 3500.3 sets a longer storm recurrence interval for box gutters than for eaves gutters, because a box gutter that overflows discharges into the ceiling, not over the edge. The Plumbing Code and HB 39 also require a dedicated overflow that carries water clear of the structure. Many older Brisbane commercial roofs have no overflow at all, and gutter sizes are rarely recalculated when a roof area changes. That is where most storm damage starts.

An eaves gutter hangs off the edge and overflows outward. A box gutter sits inside the roofline and overflows inward, so it is sized to a harsher standard and needs its own overflow.
